Endless modes are where strategy games show their real hand

August 4, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

I judge a lot of strategy games by their endless mode. A campaign can hide shallow design behind scripted variety, but an endless mode has nowhere to hide. It either keeps surprising you or it does not.

Good endless modes escalate in ways that break your comfortable setup. Just as you settle into a strategy, a new enemy mix forces you to adapt, and that constant renegotiation is what keeps me playing past bedtime.

Watch how the game handles late scaling. If it just multiplies enemy health forever, the mode becomes a grind. If it introduces genuinely new threats, you get an ongoing puzzle instead.

When you review a game for yourself, spend an evening only in endless mode. It tells you far more about long term value than another polished campaign level ever will.
