Beating difficulty spikes without grinding

Beating difficulty spikes without grinding

June 12, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Difficulty spikes are where a lot of players quit a strategy game, often right before it gets good. The instinct is to grind the same run harder, but the fix is usually a rethink.

When a wave crushes you repeatedly, stop retrying and study it. What type of enemy is getting through? Is it speed, numbers, or resistance? Naming the problem is half the solution and stops you from flailing.

Sometimes the answer is earlier, not at the spike itself. A stronger early economy funds a better mid game, so losing at wave twelve might mean you built too slowly at wave three. Trace the run backwards.

And do not be shy about lowering difficulty to learn the wave patterns, then stepping it back up. Understanding beats stubbornness, and no run is worth a hundred blind retries.
